Add Page Numbers prints a page number in the header or footer of every page — or of the pages you pick. Numbers are drawn as vector text, so page order is unchanged and nothing is converted to images.
They start at 1 by default (1, 2, 3…), never zero-based. You can choose any start number — a 5-page PDF starting at 10 prints 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 — and it only starts at 0 if you explicitly enter 0.
By default numbers follow each page’s position in the document: a range of 3-5 prints 3, 4, 5 on pages 3, 4, 5 and leaves pages 1–2 unnumbered. Tick "number only the selected pages" and numbering restarts at the start number instead — page 3 prints 1, page 4 prints 2, page 5 prints 3.
Neither. Numbers are drawn as PDF vector text on top of the original pages, so the order and page count are unchanged and nothing is rasterized. Even if a page has its own rotation setting, the number appears in the right place as you see the page.
