WHAT IS ROAS CALCULATOR?

The ROAS Calculator takes ad spend and ad revenue and returns ROAS (revenue ÷ spend), ACoS (spend ÷ revenue) and cost per order (CPA). Add product cost, fees, refunds and fixed costs to get break-even ROAS (1 ÷ contribution margin), the ROAS needed for a target net margin, profit after ads and a profit table at different ROAS levels. You can also blend several ad channels into one blended ROAS.

How to use?

  1. In "ROAS & ACoS" enter ad spend and ad revenue, and optionally orders, clicks and impressions to get CPA, CPC, CTR and CVR.
  2. Switch to "Break-even & profit" and enter the average order value and the contribution margin (or break down product cost, fees, refunds and fixed cost).
  3. Read break-even ROAS, the ROAS needed for your target net margin, profit after ads and the ROAS comparison table.
  4. Use "Blend channels" to enter each channel's spend and revenue, get the blended ROAS, and copy or download the CSV.

Notes

  • Example: spend 1,000 and revenue 4,000 → ROAS 4 and ACoS 25%; with a 40% contribution margin break-even ROAS is 2.5, so ROAS 4 is profitable: 4,000 × 40% − 1,000 = 600.
  • The contribution margin is measured after refunds and on gross ad-attributed revenue, matching how ROAS is measured; if the contribution is ≤ 0, no ROAS can break even.
  • ROAS excludes organic and repeat sales, and attribution rules differ by platform, so figures are not always directly comparable.
  • Everything is calculated in your browser; amounts can be in any single currency.

Frequently asked questions

How do ROAS, ACoS and ROI differ?

ROAS = ad revenue ÷ ad spend, showing the revenue per unit of advertising; ACoS = ad spend ÷ ad revenue, the exact reciprocal of ROAS. ROI is profit after all costs ÷ the cost invested, so it measures how much you actually gained. ROAS and ACoS look only at revenue and do not mean you are profitable.

How is break-even ROAS calculated?

Break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ contribution margin, where the contribution margin is the share of revenue left after product cost, fees, shipping and refunds but before ad spend. With a 40% contribution margin, break-even ROAS is 2.5: above 2.5 you profit, below it you lose money.

How do I find the ROAS needed for a target net margin?

ROAS for a net margin m = 1 ÷ (contribution margin − m). With a 45% contribution margin and a 10% net-margin goal you need 1 ÷ 0.35 ≈ 2.86. If the target is greater than or equal to the contribution margin it cannot be reached however you spend, and the tool says so.

Why can't I just average ROAS across ad channels?

Channels differ in spend, so averaging ROAS exaggerates small-budget channels. The correct blended ROAS = total revenue ÷ total spend. For example spend 100 with revenue 500 (ROAS 5) plus spend 900 with revenue 900 (ROAS 1) blends to 1,400 ÷ 1,000 = 1.4, not the average of 3.

Can ROAS figures differ by platform?

Yes. Ad platforms use different attribution windows, cross-device attribution, view-through conversions and double-counting rules, so one sale can be claimed as revenue by several platforms. Reported ROAS values therefore cannot always be added or compared directly; check them against your own actual revenue data.

How do I enter the contribution margin? Can I skip the cost breakdown?

Choose "Enter contribution margin directly" and type the share of revenue left after product cost, fees, shipping and refunds, or choose "Break down costs" and enter product cost %, fee %, refund % and fixed cost per order. Both end up as the same contribution margin, which drives break-even ROAS and profit after ads.

Formulas and assumptions
  • ROAS = ad revenue ÷ ad spend; ACoS = ad spend ÷ ad revenue = 1 ÷ ROAS.
  • Break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ contribution margin; ROAS for a target net margin m = 1 ÷ (contribution margin − m).
  • The contribution margin is measured after refunds and on gross ad-attributed revenue, which matches how ROAS is measured.
  • ROAS excludes organic and repeat sales; attribution windows, cross-device and view-through rules differ by platform, so figures are not always comparable.
  • A high ROAS does not mean profit: what matters is whether it is above your break-even ROAS.
