WHAT IS PAYMENT PROCESSING FEE CALCULATOR?

The Payment Processing Fee Calculator estimates card and wallet fees for Stripe (US, Japan, UK, Germany) and PayPal US. Formula: fee = (rate + surcharges) × amount + fixed fee, rounded to the currency's smallest unit, and net = amount − fee. Besides the forward estimate it works backwards to what you must charge to receive a target amount, and adds a plan comparison, monthly volume, a break-even amount, and the cost of refunds and disputes; markets that are not built in can use a custom rate.

How to use?

  1. Pick a fee plan (or "Custom rate") and tick international card or currency conversion if they apply; for PayPal choose the received currency.
  2. In "Fee estimate" enter the payment amount to see the fee, the net and the effective rate.
  3. In "Reverse: what to charge" enter the amount you want to receive to get what to charge the customer; "Monthly volume" estimates monthly and yearly fees.
  4. Use "Compare plans" to rank same-currency plans and find the break-even amount, and "Refunds & disputes" to see that refunds do not return the fee and what a dispute costs.

Notes

  • Example: a $100 standard card payment on Stripe US costs 100 × 2.9% + 0.30 = $3.20, leaving $96.80; to receive $100 you must charge about $103.30.
  • Rates come from the Stripe and PayPal official pages as hand-maintained static data, with a warning after 45 days without verification; negotiated pricing, volume discounts, taxes and local payment methods are excluded, and Stripe's Japan page does not say whether its rate includes tax.
  • Processors' rounding can differ from this tool by one minor unit, and refunds do not return the original processing fee; your statement is authoritative.
  • This tool is not affiliated with Stripe or PayPal, and everything is calculated in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Which gateways and markets are supported? What if mine is missing?

Built in are Stripe's standard rates for the US, Japan, the UK and Germany, and PayPal US rates for checkout, Venmo, advanced cards and QR code. For other markets, or rates you negotiated, choose "Custom rate" and enter the percentage, fixed fee and currency.

How does "reverse: what to charge" work?

Enter the amount you want to receive and the tool finds the smallest amount to charge: roughly (net + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − rate), rounded up to the currency's smallest unit and then re-checked with the forward formula so the net after fees is never below your target. It suits passing fees on to customers or pricing a fee-inclusive amount.

Is the fee returned on a refund? What does a dispute cost?

According to Stripe and PayPal, refunds do not return the processing fee originally charged, so a full refund costs the merchant that fee. Chargebacks and disputes carry a separate fixed dispute fee, shown per plan on the "Refunds & disputes" tab, not counting the sale itself if you lose the dispute.

How do I set international cards, currency conversion and PayPal's fixed fee?

Ticking "International card / cross-border" or "Currency conversion needed" adds the surcharge percentage that plan publishes; PayPal's fixed fee switches to PayPal's published per-currency table according to the "received currency" (USD and JPY differ, for example). PayPal's conversion spread is generally 3% and 4% in cases such as paying in a currency other than the listed one; the tool uses 3% and notes this.

Does Stripe Japan's rate include tax?

Stripe's Japan page lists the card rate without saying whether it includes consumption tax, so the tool assumes neither; rely on your invoice and contract. That is why a "tax treatment not stated" note appears with the Japan plan.

How often are the rates updated, and can I treat them as exact costs?

Rates are static data maintained by hand against the official pages; sources, page dates and the verification date are listed under the tool, and a warning appears if it has not been verified for more than 45 days. They are estimates at public standard prices, excluding negotiated pricing, volume discounts, taxes and local payment methods, and this tool is not affiliated with Stripe or PayPal; your statements decide the real cost.

How are amounts rounded? Why is my statement off by one cent?

The tool rounds the fee half-up to the currency's smallest unit (to the cent for dollars, to whole numbers for yen). Processors may round slightly differently, so a single payment can differ by one minor unit; for large volumes, your statement is authoritative.

Formulas and assumptions
  • Fee = amount × (rate + surcharges) + fixed, rounded half-up to the currency's smallest unit (yen have no decimals, dollars go to the cent).
  • Reverse: charge ≈ (net + fixed) ÷ (1 − rate), rounded up and then re-checked with the forward formula so the net is never below your target.
  • Processors' own rounding can differ from this by one minor unit; your statement is authoritative.
  • Refunds do not return the original processing fee; disputes carry a separate fee.
  • Rates differ by country, card type and account contract; for markets not built in, use a custom rate.
