OCR Image to Text recognizes printed text in an image and converts it into editable text — the entire recognition process runs locally in your browser.
OCR (Optical Character Recognition) converts text that appears in an image into searchable, editable text. This tool runs the open-source Tesseract.js engine directly in your browser — your image is never uploaded to a server.
English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, German, and an "Auto / Mixed" option (loads English + Traditional Chinese + Simplified Chinese together — not true automatic language detection).
This tool has limited accuracy on handwriting — it works best on printed text or screenshots. Recognition quality is also affected by image resolution, skew, and noise.
Your image is processed locally in your browser and is not uploaded to the JoeLucky server. The first time you use a language, your browser downloads and caches that language's recognition model — this is separate from image upload.
No — recognition runs entirely in your browser. The one exception is that your chosen language's recognition model is downloaded and cached by your browser from tesseract.js's default source the first time you use it — that is separate from uploading your image.
Only with limited accuracy. The engine used here is primarily designed for printed text — handwriting (especially cursive or irregular writing) typically recognizes poorly. It works best on printed documents or screenshots.
No. "Auto / Mixed" actually loads English, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese models together for recognition — it does not detect the image's actual language. For Japanese or German text, selecting that language directly gives better results.
Before recognition, images above a reasonable resolution are automatically downscaled to an OCR-appropriate size — extra resolution doesn't improve accuracy, it only costs more memory and time. Both file size and resolution have limits, and exceeding them shows a clear error message.
