Color Contrast Checker

Check the WCAG contrast ratio between two colors and see AA and AAA pass or fail results.

Sample text — The quick brown fox
18.88:1Contrast ratio (WCAG formula)
Normal text AA (≥ 4.5:1)Pass
Normal text AAA (≥ 7:1)Pass
Large text AA (≥ 3:1)Pass
Large text AAA (≥ 4.5:1)Pass

This tool only reports the raw WCAG contrast-ratio formula result and pass/fail against the four thresholds — it does not mean "this page is WCAG compliant." Real compliance still depends on font size, weight, and the rest of your design.

WHAT IS COLOR CONTRAST CHECKER?

The Color Contrast Checker computes the contrast ratio between foreground and background colors using the WCAG formula, flagging AA/AAA pass status for normal and large text.

Important

  1. Pass/fail is always shown with both text and an icon — never conveyed by color alone.
  2. This tool only checks one color pair — passing does not mean an entire page is WCAG compliant.

How to use?

  1. Pick the foreground and background colors (swatch or hex input).
  2. Review the live preview and the contrast result.

Frequently asked questions

Does passing AA mean my page is WCAG compliant?

Not necessarily. This tool only reports the raw contrast-ratio calculation and pass/fail against the four thresholds — real WCAG compliance also depends on font size, weight, and your overall design.

Why isn’t pass/fail shown with color alone?

Color alone (e.g. a green or red dot) is inaccessible to color-blind users, so every threshold always shows both an icon and a text label (Pass/Fail).

How is a semi-transparent background handled?

A transparent background needs an extra opaque "canvas background" color — the tool uses the core’s existing compositing logic to compute the resulting opaque color before calculating contrast.
